Honoring Vets on Veterans Day
Long Island Council of the Navy League of the United States Recognizes Three LI World War II Veterans, Members of The Greatest Generation, for Valiant U.S. Military Service
Lt. Commander Jules V. Steinhauer of Farmingdale, Radio Technician 1st Class Victor Nelson of Bethpage, and Late Communications Officer, Radar-Man 2nd Class, RD2 William J. Evanzia of Westbury, NY Honored
The Long Island Council of the Navy League of the United States recently held a World War II Veterans Recognition Event in conjunction with Veteran’s Day. The event honored the heroic service efforts of three Long Island World War II veterans who protected our freedoms during their service in the United States military: Lieutenant Commander Jules V. Steinhauer of Farmingdale, NY, Radio Technician 1st Class Victor Nelson pf Bethpage, NY, and the late William J. Evanzia of Westbury, NY, Communications Officer, Radar-Man 2nd Class, RD2, who was honored posthumously.
Long Island Council of the Navy League of the United States President Roger Noakes of South Setauket, NY commented, “The Navy League motto is ‘Citizens in Support of Sea Services’ and our Long Island Council focuses on activities that support, encourage and honor members in our community. We are extremely pleased to recognize three veterans who served our nation during World War II, Lieutenant Commander Steinhauer, Radio Technician 1st Class Nelson and late Communications Officer, Radar-Man 2nd Class, RD2 Evanzia.”
In thanking the veterans for their service to the United States of America, President Noakes quoted General George S. Patton who said “Wars are fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads, that gains the victory”.
Invocation was provided by Long Island Council of the Navy League of the United States Vice President and Chaplain, Reverend Owen W. Watford of Hempstead, NY. Additional remarks were contributed by active military members Naval Operational Support Center (NOSC) Commanding Officer, Commander Creighton Ho along with U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lieutenant Owen VanWyck.
This Long Island Word War II Veterans Recognition event, held at Villa Olivetti in St. James, NY, brought together some fifty veterans, defense contractors, and Navy League supporters.

New Leadership for The Long Island Council Of The Navy League
President Noakes and Vice President Watford Installed
The Long Island Council of The Navy League of the United States, an organization dedicated to strengthening the ties between Long Island-based defense supporters and veterans and the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard and maritime sea services, has announced new leadership. Mr. Roger Noakes (South Setauket, NY) has been elected President, and Mr. Owen W. Watford (Hempstead, NY) has been elected Vice President by the Long Island Council of The Navy League, Corporate Council.
Mr. Noakes succeeds longtime President Forrest “Woody” Woodward. Mr. Noakes commented “I am very proud to be elected Council President and I look forward to helping shape the direction and future of the organization. Long Island is home to hundreds of defense contractors, active sea service personnel, veterans and cadet youths, all of whom we support through the outstanding work of our corporate members as well as through legislative outreach. Forthcoming efforts will highlight the valuable work of defense contractors and honor the invaluable contributions of veterans through fellowship events and activities.”
Vice President Watford added “being in a position to assist our men and women in uniform and all our veterans through corporate support and grassroots efforts creates a feeling of accomplishment in the defense of our nation. I’m pleased to announce that we will continue our tradition of commissioning US Navy ships with the commissioning of the Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Patrick Gallagher which is currently under construction.”
